Introduction to WorkLore

Worklore: Brooklyn Workers Speak, a joint research/exhibition project of The Brooklyn Historical Society and the Brooklyn Public Library, explores the work lives of Brooklynites as they made, and continue to make, their living in the borough. Using photographs and personal quotes, this online exhibition compares the experience of working in the past to doing so today.

The exhibit is organized around four themes:

Confronting Racial Bias (discrimination in the workplace) Women Breaking Barriers (women's changing work roles)
Seeking A Better Life (issues facing new immigrants to Brooklyn) Changes in the Workplace (unemployment and job displacement
Each of these themes offer an audio component so that you can hear the voices of individual workers telling their stories. Some of these are historical accounts performed by actors, and others are authentic contemporary voices.
